yesterday was our first practice with kevin playing drums...it went very well. kevin is amazing, and i am really looking forward to seeing him a bit more frequently. at one point we were outside, kicking around a soccer ball, and i kicked it up pretty high, then hit it with my head. i felt wetness on my head (the grass was wet), but when i used my hand to wipe my forehead off i found out that i had dog poop on my head. it was not pleasant. i then noticed it was also on both legs of my pants, just above my shoes, where the ball had also hit. it made for a good laugh, i guess.

so, it's been a while since i have been at the studio every single day, but since we have no film scoring work right now, that's where i'll be. i don't mind, it gives me time to sit, and be on the internet...which gets old pretty quickly. the only free time i have in the next week will be spent doing some recording at home with j. tillman. the 3 demos we did turned out pretty well, and i am looking forward to finishing the record, although it may be weeks before we are done.

in just over a week, i'll be going to michigan for a few days. i am really looking forward to seeing mary. i haven't seen her since the 2nd week of august. i wish i could stay longer, but i need to work as much as possible. most of my income is made doing film score sessions, so when it's slow, that means my cash flow is also slow (this is why i will be at the studio every day before i leave, and after i return).

i am excited for thanksgiving. my sister and her husband will be visiting from london. i haven't seen them since mary and i were in london last december. for christmas i will be going to orlando, to visit my brother and his wife. they are having a baby in early december (the first among my siblings), so my parents and i are going to spend christmas with them. i am looking forward to that trip as well. although, i don't really care for orlando, i haven't been there in over 3 and a half years, so i am well overdue for a visit.

i received several phone calls before i woke up this morning. all from people who had heard about what happened in london. as i checked my messages, at 7:30am, i had a message from mary that said there had been a terrorist bombing in london, and one of the bombs went off at the edgeware road tube station. having seen all the missed calls i had, my heart stopped. edgeware road station is 5 blocks from my sisters apartment, and 2 blocks from her office. the next message was from my dad. thankfully he said he had received a text message from my sister saying that she was okay. i talked to my sister later this afternoon...she said she got to work about 20 minutes after the explosion, before they had blocked off the streets. she said that she saw people coming up out of the tube station, covered with black soot, and crying. her office was turned into an area where rescue workers could come to rest and get a cup of tea, or coffee, and some food. luckily there is a hospital less than a quarter of a mile away, so most of the injured people were moved there relatively quickly.

i don't really know what to say...it's very strange to have something like this happen, and have it hit so close to home. edgeware road station was the tube sation that mary and i used most when we were in london last year.

The show celebrates the release of Dear Darling's self-released full-length Songs of Friends and Family, which will break your heart and pick up the pieces all in one fell swoop.

Their sound is comparable to the more somber tunes on Death Cab for Cutie's Something About Airplanes but with a heavier (though still subtle) rock framework, thicker guitar, and occasional keyboard riffs. And there are sadder lyrics being sung by an even sadder-sounding boy (Jesse Smith), whose voice amazingly wavers on the edge of meltdown.

When he sings, "You're the one with problems here/if you can't love me now/I can't wait for you, my dear/to come around" on "When Love Doesn't Love You Back," one of the more aggressive songs on the album, everyone currently batting for Team Heartbreak will probably feel a little empathetic lump form in his or her throat.

this is the second time in the past couple of months the stranger has printed a short review of our record...i can't believe it.

MEGAN SELING - The Stranger, Seattle:

"Dear Darling's upcoming record, Songs of Friends and Family (due out this Spring), sounds like the result of a sad soul being locked in a cold studio apartment with a few bottles of cheap liquor after a party where everything went wrong. It's a somber album but it's one that also possesses a beautiful sort of bitterness. And just like selfish depression itself, the band's melancholy batch of simplistic, honest indie rock is both comforting and tragic. At times, Jesse Smith's vocals come close to breaking, but they never actually do, and the guitar and bass intertwine, taking turns in the driver's seat while the drumming remains steady and grounded. Had I heard this record in December, when it was dark by noon and almost too cold to breathe, I might never have survived the winter."

___________________________________________________________________________

The CD will be available at shows, as well as Sonic Boom Records, in Fremont and Ballard.
so, i just went to pick up some dinner, since we are going to be working late tonight. we went to a pretty nice italian restaraunt, downtown. i went to the hostess counter, because i had already called in our "to-go" order, and asked where i would pick the order up at. she says it's at the bar, upstairs. so, i head for the stairs, and there is like a small tile landing at the base of the stairs, which is about 4 inches above the floor that i am walking on. i totally didn't see it, and i tripped and fell on the stairs. it wasn't just a trip and fall, though. it was like slow motion, because i almost caught myself at 2 different times during the fall, but both attempts at correcting my error were failures. not only did i fall all the way to the ground, but as i put my arms out, on the first step, to catch myself, they missed. so i went ALL the way down. my chin touched the second step. it's okay, though, because there were only about 50 people standing right there, watching the whole thing. i jumped up, walked casually up the stairs, laughing...didn't even look back. hahaha.

winter is here...it is cold. i guess that's about as bad as it gets here...not even that cold...usually 40's, sometimes 30's, sometimes 50's...relatively mild. i have prepared myself for the colder weather by growing a very large beard. it is definitely the largest i have ever had. it is furry, and warm.

the cold weather always brings a reminder of being another year older. this year is better than previous, though, because 2 weeks from yesterday i will be leaving for a much anticipated vacation...i will get to see mary, and we will go to london, to visit my sister. i am so excited.

i have received wonderful birthday gifts this year...

a pipe
pipe tobacco
pipe cleaning, and tamping tools
2 books (i am excited to read both)
a wonderful, homemade card
photobooth pictures
a dickies messenger bag (i haven't received it yet...damn united parcel service)
a dvd (eternal sunshine of a spotless mind)

...and for myself i bought an ipod...mostly for the airplane ride to and from london (no more carrying a huge, heavy case of cd's, and a cd player).

...also, i want to buy a camera...my old camera (a very nice, old pentax), was loaned to a friend of a friend, who lost it. she wanted to replace it, but never returned my phone calls, and has now moved away, with no way for me to contact her...poop. so, i want to get a new camera for the trip...we'll see.

this show is a benefit for kevin barrans (drummer for suffering and the hideous thieves, and the prom). it is to raise money to help him pay his medical bills, from a recent motorcycle accident. there was originally going to be a prom reunion show, with a different drummer, but now broecker (the bass player for the prom) has hurt his back. so, it will be james mendenhall playing solo (the lead singer from the prom).
